Avengers Vol 1 #9 October, 1964 Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee Cover Artists Jack Kirby Dick Ayers "The Coming Of The...Wonder Man!" / ARRIVA WONDER MAN ! (2a parte) Writers Stan Lee Pencilers Don Heck Inkers Dick Ayers Featured Characters: Avengers Captain America (Steve Rogers) Thor Iron Man (Tony Stark) Giant-Man (Henry Pym) Wasp Supporting Characters: Wonder Man (First appearance) Villains: The Masters of Evil Baron Zemo (Heinrich Zemo) Enchantress Executioner Other Characters: Teen Brigade Jane Foster Items: Iron Man Armor MK III Mjolnir Captain America's Shield Synopsis (Continued from last issue) Baron Zemo, the Executioner and the Enchantress scheme on how to defeat the Avengers. They notice in the news that Simon Williams, arrested for embezzling money, blames Tony Stark. They agree to help him get revenge on Stark as Iron Man is his bodyguard (they are unaware they are one and the same). They take Williams to the Amazon jungle and use a machine on him which makes him all-powerful, but to keep him under control, Zemo poisons him and only he knows the antidote. They stage a battle against the Avengers in that Wonder Man comes and aids the Avengers to earn their trust. He then explains the illness he has and the Avengers help to find a cure. The Wasp is taken captive and the Avengers go to save her only to be betrayed by Wonder Man. The Masters of Evil come very close to defeating the Avengers when Wonder Man decides to betray them as the Avengers did all they could to save him even though they didn't know him. Wonder Man saves the Avengers then subsequently dies from the poison. Notes Thor is last seen in Journey Into Mystery #109 (in Italy in THC #14) where he battled Magneto. Giant Man and Wasp were last seen in Tales to Astonish #60 (in Italy in URC #44) where they battled the Beasts of Berlin, they also made a brief appearance in Tales of Suspense #58 where they help capture the Chameleon Captain America was last seen in Tales of Suspense #58 (in Italy in DEVC #42), where he is knocked out by the Chameleon who takes his place. Cap eventually revives and with the help of the Avengers defeats the Chameleon. Iron Man was also last seen in Tales of Suspense 58 (in Italy in DEVC #42), where he battled Kraven the Hunter and the Chameleon. The Chameleon later disguises himself as Captain America and Iron Man with the help of the real Cap, Giant Man and Wasp capture him. Baron Zemo, Enchantress and the Executioner were trapped between the sixth and seventh dimensions by Thor in Avengers #7 (in Italy in THC #14). This is the first appearance of Wonder Man, although he "dies" in this issue, he returns from the dead in Avengers #151 (in Italy in THC #198). His inert body is seen next in Avengers #102 (in Italy in THC #114). During the Avengers' tests on a cure for Wonder Man's condition, Giant-Man takes grafts of Wonder Man's brain patterns, which would later be used to found the personality of the Vision, this is revealed in Avengers #58 (in Italy in THC #71). Perhaps as a result, when Wonder Man is revived, both he and the Vision share romantic feelings for the same woman: The Scarlet Witch. Baron Zemo, Enchantress, and the Executioner are next seen in Avengers #10 (in Italy in THC #17). Thor is next seen in Journey Into Mystery #110 (in Italy in THC #15). Iron Man and Captain America are next seen in Tales of Suspense #59 (in Italy in DEVC #43 and in CAPC #1). Giant Man and Wasp in Tales to Astonish #61 (in Italy in URC #45). The Avengers also make a brief appearance in Fantastic Four #31 (in Italy in F4C #25) where they attempt to assist the Fantastic Four in apprehending the Mole Man. This story is Job# X-795. Avengers Vol 1 #10 November, 1964 Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee Cover Artists Jack Kirby Dick Ayers "The Avengers Break Up!" / I VENDICATORI SI SCATENANO ! Writers Stan Lee Pencilers Don Heck Inkers Dick Ayers Featured Characters: The Avengers Captain America Thor Iron Man Giant-Man Wasp Supporting Characters: Teen Brigade Rick Jones Villains: Immortus (First appearance) The Masters of Evil Baron Zemo Enchantress Executioner Other Characters: Attilia the Hun Hercules (not the hero of Marvel canon) Paul Bunyan Goliath (the biblical giant) Merlin the Magican Medieval Guards Locations: Avengers Mansion The Tower of London Zemo's Headquarters Items: Iron Man Armor MK III Mjolnir Captain America's Shield Synopsis Immortus appears before the Masters of Evil, wanting to ally himself with them. They agree to do so one condition:- to destroy the Avengers. Immortus agrees. He puts an advert in a newspaper offering people superpowers. Rick Jones notices the ad as he wants power to increase his chances of being an Avenger, and falls for the trap. Captain America finds the ad and goes to Rick's help. Immortus tells Captain America that one of the other Avengers sent Rick here. Cap goes back to HQ to find the traitor and takes them all back to Immortus. Immortus pits each Avenger to a character picked out of time that is similar to them, and all are beaten easily. Immortus grabs Captain America and sends him back into time to save Rick. The other Avengers are attacked by the Masters of Evil while they are weakened. Captain America saves Rick and is sent back to the present time and help defeat the Masters of Evil. Notes Thor is last seen in a battle against Mister Hyde and the Cobra over the fate of Jane Foster. This battle carries on through the course of Journey Into Mystery #110 and Journey Into Mystery 111 (in Italy in THC #15). Iron Man is last seen battling the Black Knight in Tales of Suspense #59 (in Italy in DEVC #43), Cap is also featured in his first Silver Age solo story in this issue as well (in Italy in CAPC #1). Giant Man and Wasp were last seen tackling Egghead and one of his androids in Tales to Astonish #61 (in Italy in URC #45). The Enchantress, Executioner, and Baron Zemo were all last seen in Avengers #9 (in Italy in THC #16). Executioner mentions Odin taking away a portion of his and Enchantress's power back in Avengers #7 (in Italy in THC #14) following their defeat at the hands of Thor in Journey Into Mystery #103 (in Italy in THC #10). Although this is the first appearance of Immortus, he is later revealed to be yet another future version of Rama Tut and Kang in Giant-Size Avengers #2 (in Italy in THC #137/138). Although Immortus uses many figures from different points in history, it's entirely possible that these are all imposter's or from alternate time lines as Merlin does not recall his battle with Thor in Journey Into Mystery #96 (in Italy in THC #6), nor does Hercules remember his battle with Thor in later issues. Thor's next "new" appearance (as Journey Into Mystery #110-111 is a two part story) is Journey Into Mystery #112 (in Italy also in THC #15) where Thor recounts additional details in his battle against the Hulk from Avengers #3 (in Italy in THC #8). Giant Man and Wasp are next seen in Tales to Astonish #62 (in Italy in URC #46) where they fight each other. Iron Man is next seen in Tales of Suspense #60 (in Italy in DEVC #44) where he battles Hawkeye for the second time. Captain America & Rick Jones next appear in a solo adventure in Tales of Suspense #60 (in Italy in CAPC #1) as well where they battle Baron Zemo and his army of assassins. Immortus' alter ego Kang appears next issue. Immortus is seen briefly in Avengers #16 (in Italy in THC #24). He will then not appear again until Giant-Size Avengers #2 (in Italy in THC #137/138). Baron Zemo is next seen in Tales of Suspense #60 (in Italy in CAPC #1) where he battles Captain America. Enchantress and the Executioner are not seen again until Avengers #15 (in Italy in THC #22). Avengers Vol 1 #11 December, 1964 Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee Cover Artists Jack Kirby Dick Ayers "The Mighty Avengers Meet Spider-Man!" / I POTENTI VENDICATORI CONTRO L' UOMO RAGNO Writers Stan Lee Pencilers Don Heck Inkers Chic Stone Featured Characters: Avengers Captain America (Steve Rogers) Thor Giant-Man (Henry Pym) Wasp Supporting Characters: Rick Jones Spider-Man Villains: Kang Spider-Man Robot Other Characters: Wonder Man (Only in flashback) Executioner (Only in flashback) Baron Zemo (Only in flashback) Radioactive Man (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Unicorn (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Mysterio (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Magneto (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Doctor Doom (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Kraven (Appears on a Computer Screen, TV or Hologram Only) Locations: NYC Items: Mjolnir Captain America's Shield Synopsis Iron Man is declared on a leave of absence from the Avengers as he is missing, and now that they are weaker Kang decides to try and defeat them again. His method of defeating them is to create a replica robot of Spider-Man, because of his vast range of powers. The robot Spider-Man then attempts to join the Avengers, claiming he knows the whereabouts of Iron Man. He leads the Avengers to a temple where he separates them and defeats them all one by one. However, the real Spider-Man appears on the scene and defeats the robot copy and saves the Avengers. Notes The Spider-Man robot appears next in Spider-Man Team-Up 4 (1996, in Italy in URDL #27) in battle again with the Avengers and Spider-man. Great controversy as to the cover credits to this issue. This editor (as well as George Olshevsky of Marvel Comic Index fame) gives credit to Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers. However, it is highly probable that Steve Ditko did the image of Spider-Man for the cover. Iron Man appears on the cover of this issue, but does not appear in the story. Even though this issue came out a month prior, all it's characters were previously involved in their respective titles that were published in January of 1965. While Journey Into Mystery 111 (in Italy in THC #15) is the last published Thor story, it is the 2nd part to a 2 part story that started in Journey Into Mystery 110 (in Italy in THC #15) which occurred prior to Avengers #10. Based on the fact that this story is set after Tales of Suspense 61 (in Italy in DEVC #45), Thor's last chronological appearance was in Journey Into Mystery 112 (in Italy also in THC #15), where Thor recounts his battle with the Hulk which occurred back in Avengers 3 (in Italy in THC #8). Iron Man was last seen in Tales of Suspense 60 (in Italy in DEVC #44) where he battled Hawkeye, and in Tales of Suspense 61 (in Italy in DEVC #45) where he battles the Mandarin once more, and fakes the death of Tony Stark. Captain America last appeared also in Tales of Suspense 60 (in Italy in CAPC #1) where he battled Baron Zemo and his army of assassins, and in Tales of Suspense 61 (in Italy in CAPGC #1) where he traveled to Viet Nam to battle Sumo. Giant Man and Wasp appeared last in Tales to Astonish 62 (in Italy in URC #46) where they battled each other and in Tales to Astonish 63 (in Italy in URC #47) where they battled the Wrecker. Spider-Man makes his appearance in this issue following the events of Amazing Spider-Man 20 (in Italy in URC #17) where he battled the Scorpion. While Kang's alter ego Immortus appeared in the previous issue of Avengers, Kang himself has not been seen since Avengers 8 (in Italy in THC #16). Thor's mention of Tony Stark's "death" occurred in Tales of Suspense 61 (in Italy in DEVC #45), wherein Iron Man faked the death of his civilian guise after finding the dual identity role too difficult to maintain. This is the first time Spider-Man has met the Avengers as a team, however he has met them all individually at one time or another, his most recent previous encounter with the different members of the Avengers was back in Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1 (in Italy in URC #14). Kang's reference to his first battle with the Avengers was from back in Avengers 8 (in Italy in THC #16). Kang's mention of the Avengers battling the Masters of Evil and Wonder Man are a reference to Avengers 9 (in Italy in THC #16). Presumably Kang's lack of knowledge of Immortus' battle against the Avengers in Avengers 10 (in Italy in THC #17) is unknown to him due to the fact that the story ends in a time paradox that erased the events of their battle, only Zemo, Executioner and Enchantress have knowledge of the battle ever occurring (Ain't time travel great?) Kang views Spider-Man's past battle with Kraven the Hunter, this battle occurred in Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1 (in Italy in URC #14). The villains the Kang contemplates replicating (on Page 4 panel 1) are (from left to right) Radioactive Man, the Unicorn, Mysterio, Magneto and Doctor Doom. Following his adventure with the Avengers, Spider-Man is next seen in Amazing Spider-Man 21 (in Italy in URC #17) where he and the Human Torch (Johnny Storm) battle the Beetle. After his defeat at the hands of the Avengers and Spider-Man, Kang is next seen in Strange Tales 134 (in Italy in F4C #35) where he attempts to take over medievel times and is stopped by the Thing and the Human Torch. Thor, Captain America, Giant Man, Wasp, and Iron Man are all seen again in Avengers 12 (in Italy in THC #19). Avengers Vol 1 #12 January, 1965 Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee Cover Artists Jack Kirby "This Hostage Earth!" / LA TERRA IN OSTAGGIO ! (1a parte) Writers Stan Lee Pencilers Don Heck Inkers Dick Ayers Featured Characters: Avengers Captain America (Steve Rogers) Thor Iron Man (Tony Stark) Giant-Man (Henry Pym) Wasp Supporting Characters: Rick Jones Villains: Mole Man Moloids Other Characters: Fantastic Four (Appears in flashback) Invisible Girl (Appears in flashback) Mister Fantastic (Appears in flashback) Human Torch (Appears in flashback) Locations: Avengers Mansion New York The Mole Man's Subterrain lair Items: Iron Man Armor MK III Mjolnir Captain America's Shield Synopsis Giant-Man believes something dangerous is happening beneath the earth but none of the other Avengers believe him, so he heads underground himself to investigate. Shortly after, he is captured by Mole Man. (Continued to next issue) Notes Since the events of Tales of Suspense #61 (in Italy in DEVC #45) occurred prior to Avengers #11, it stands to reason that all the heroes solo titles for this month all occur prior to the events of Avengers #11 (in Italy in THC #18). Mole Man was last seen in Fantastic Four #31 (in Italy in F4C #25). Thor mentions Mole Man's apparent demise at the hand of the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four #31 (in Italy in F4C #25). In that issue, the Avengers attempted to intervene in the Fantastic Fours attempt to stop him in this issue. Thor is next seen in Journey Into Mystery #113 (in Italy in THC #17), where he attempts to reveal his identity as Don Blake to Jane Foster and battles the Grey Gargoyle. Iron Man is next seen battling the Mandarin (again) in Tales of Suspense #62 (in Italy in DEVC #46). Captain America is next seen also in Tales of Suspense 62 (in Italy in CAPC #2), preventing a jail break. Giant Man and Wasp are next seen in Tales to Astonish #64 (in Italy in URC #48) where they battle Attuma. The Mole Man and Red Ghost are next seen in Fantastic Four Annual 3 (in Italy in F4C #39) where they are manipulated by Dr. Doom to crash Reed Richards and Sue Storm's wedding.
